David joined the board of Oxford United as a non-executive director during the 2013-14 season after an invitation from chairman Darryl Eales, who described his role as providing “football intelligence” through the knowledge he’d gained in 20 years working in the industry and his network of contacts.
David worked closely with the club’s recruitment team and provided support to the manager and the board, primarily on football issues; playing a central role in several multi-million pound transfer deals, and twice leading the club’s recruitment of a new manager.
David also found a new primary sponsor who agreed a three year deal as shirt sponsors, and helped to significantly improve the club’s PR and television exposure. During his time on the board, Oxford were promoted from League Two to League One, reached back to back EFL Trophy finals at Wembley Stadium and enjoyed two impressive FA Cup runs, taking Premier League scalps along the way.
The role offered a unique insight into the workings of professional football.
